Change the settings to the ones shown here pretty much a basic black and white trace. Open Adobe Illustrator, create a New Document and go to File>Place to place the japanese_flag.gif file.Īfter clicking on the placed file with a Selection tool, click on the down arrow next to Live Trace up on the Control palette to pull down the options. The Tracking setting icon is an uppercase AV with directional arrows underneath it. Up in the Control palette, change the tracking to 600 to spread out the spacing of the text to spread out the title. Open the Paragraph palette and click the center justify icon to center the text after highlighting it. For this tutorial, add just a simple title at the top of each page by clicking-and-dragging out a text box along the top. You can add photos, text, or shapes and they’ll be on every page. And all the objects don’t have to be automatically updated objects, either. Page numbers are not the only objects to put onto the master pages. If you put the text boxes for the page numbers in the same locations as I chose to, it should look something like this. I placed the text box on the right side page on the lower right hand corner. Hold down Option (PC: Alt) and click-and-drag the text box that has the automatic page number in it over to the right page to create another instance of the Auto Page Number. Change the size (and style if you want) of the font to an appropriate one for you publication. This will insert an automated page number so you don’t have to number each page. Go to Type>Insert Special Character> Auto Page Number. In the lower-left hand corner of the left master page, click-and-drag with the Text tool to drag out a text box for the page number. Double-click on the A-Master icon on the top of the Pages pull-out palette to open up the master pages. That way we can add a header and page numbers automatically. Set the settings shown here, all the default settings, except set it to 4 pages. Open InDesign and go to File>New or click the Create New File icon on the welcome screen. If you have Adobe InDesign CS2 or later (or an earlier version, though some steps may be slightly different), you can follow along with this three-part tutorial in creating a small four-page magazine, in order to learn a few techniques and concepts along the way. In my opinion, Adobe InDesign is the best layout software available. As faculty advisor to a student newspaper, I’ve seen what problems university students often run into and concepts that are most useful to them when laying out a publication in InDesign.

It keeps triggering these out-of-body experiences in which Aubrey Graham is floating high above a poolside Drake and whispering, “Do the right thing.” The gap between his net worth and the quotidian struggles of those who will never end up on a Forbes list seems to really nag at him. They may seek ulterior motives in Drake’s fiscal altruism.īut to engage in such cynicism is to miss the point entirely.Īt a time when most celebrities are oblivious inside their own material bubbles, Drake is at least aware of the hardships that exist beyond his lavish world of mansions and private jets. They may believe this is shameless branding. 1 on the Billboard 100, is poised to more than recoup its direct-to-charity budget. On Friday, Drake’s philanthropy intersected with Drake’s commercial art to create something increasingly rare in popular culture: an uplifting music video that plays like a miniature telethon. The man’s giving just shows no sign of slowing down. You get the sense that if a stranger bumped into Drake on the street and unloaded with a genuine tale of woe, the singer would burst into tears and then hand over the fob to his Bugatti Veyron. Drake’s sense of social responsibility is now so elevated, it’s a miracle he hasn’t yet released a line of OVO Mother Teresa Retro High Tops. He is a demigod to the downtrodden, you see, and if the penniless rubes would just soak up his exalted presence, perhaps they would find it easier to find a job or keep a roof over their heads.īut unlike Jay Z, Drake’s sense of social responsibility is not a delusion conjured from the atoms of hubris. By merely existing, Jay Z believes he is making the world a better place. He was right: it’s hard to imagine a more arrogant sentiment. He responded by saying: “I’m offended by that because, first of all - and this is going to sound arrogant - but my presence is charity. Two years ago, after Harry Belafonte called him out by name for his lack of social responsibility, Jay Z started a foundation, giving millions to the sick and poor. This is a genre about the bling, not the hotline. It’s an unusual habit in the hip-hop game, where getting stinking rich is the animating goal and paying it forward is not. Lucas is earning his protection in his cell counting pushups and chatting about his cellie’s wife, who is probably going to lose his wife. Heather and her team are trying to figure out what’s up with the No-Claire Strategy, she sics Cynthia (Eisa Davis) on it. How on EARTH is a sitting President of the United States of America doing speech prep all alone without one staff member around him? He could throw someone in front of a train and everything! Small aside: Over hiatus, it appears Frank Underwood went from a fcukmonster of a certain age (he does evilly sexy so.very.well, even if he doesn’t sell hetero for shite) to somebody’s uncle what plays golf every other day and uses coded euphemisms for racial slurs.įrancis is almost frantic he’s nervous about the speech he has to give, especially without Claire by his side and they didn’t include the DAMN PHONETICS!!ĪNOTHER small note: the fact that they’re trying to sell Claire Underwood as the person who humanizes poor, beleaguered Frank is laughable. Speaking of Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey), he’s practicing his latest speech when Stampy (Michael Kelly) comes in he can’t get Claire (Robin Wright) on the phone. Maybe because Francis has just that much more scrutiny on him these days, when does a President get to go lurk at a train station anymore? It’s the loss of privacy and free time that has to get to you. Side note: none of us could believe pathetic old Lucas made it through last season. We’re in jail with Lucas (Sebastian Arcelus), who’s using his writing degree to get his cellie off, aww, who says those Liberal Arts majors can’t be useful in the real world? Marketable skill right there! I’ve mostly been steeped in excellent British dramas lately (Last Tango in Halifax, Happy Valley, River, Doctor Foster, Spotless, too many to name all) so you must excuse me if I throw in the occasional wanker or sommat here and there. Hello, I'm TalksTooMuch (but you can call me TTM) and I will be recapping House of Cards season 4 for your reading entertainment. Though her subject matter is usually dark (perhaps not the kind of books you'd want to take on a beach vacation?), all of her characters will captivate you and pull on your heartstrings. Few authors have done this for me, and even fewer have the ability to evoke these same feelings upon a re-read. I desperately wanted to reach out and comfort the characters upon finding out their fate. It's rare for me to attempt to try and guess how a book is going to end, but I certainly did not expect the ending in this book. The first time, I finished it and sat for quite awhile in shock. Three teens the reader can't help but want to see overcome their problems and become better people. Through her magnificent writing (major fan-girlsisms for this author) Hopkins spins the tales of three teens who have a rough start. Tony was found in the streets not long after ingesting far too many drugs and alcohol and nearly escaping death's grasp. Each has their own reason for being a resident at Aspen Springs, each recovering in a facility in Nevada or, as Conner puts it, “a lockdown where crazies pace.” Conner is sent to Aspen Springs after attempting to commit suicide. Impulse tells the story of three teens, Conner, Vanessa, and Tony. When I first read Crank (her debut YA novel), I found this a rather odd way to format a book, but as I read tons of YA literature, I'm seeing that this is a new trend in books and have fallen in love with it. If you have read anything by Ellen Hopkins, you likely know to expect a novel told in verse. Unfortunately, many people have for more negative reactions to this, which I will touch upon later. Due to this honest and gritty approach, I felt that Hopkins showed a huge amount of respect to both the subject matter, and the audience. This is all done with no holds barred, nothing off limits and no sugar coating. Impulse is no exception as we are presented with issues such as teen suicide, sexuality, and what family means. Her books deal with young people coping with very real issues in a heart-wrenching way, all in free verse poetry. Together they will fight to forge ahead and write a brighter chapter in their lives.Įllen Hopkins has a very distinctive style. Each has their own story: Tony can only find his peace in pills after a hellish childhood, Vanessa who has to cut so her secrets don’t tear her apart, and Connor, the picture of perfect who hides an inner turmoil. Three teens, sharing only the wish to end it all, meet after their failed suicide attempts in Aspen Springs, a psychiatric hospital. Progress towards a better us only happens when we consciously place one determined foot in front of the other. Although I am sure rehabs have peoples best interests at heart, we can see in this book that is does not always provide the help these teens/adults need. It saddens me to think that these situations happen everyday. I always feel a sudden urge to fix the injustices of the world. Hopkins’ books always find a close place in my heart. And Conner… poor Conner struggled to find himself in a world of expectation and pain. I saw the most progress in him by the end. Tony struggled with his guilt and sexuality. Although in the end, there seemed to be no reprieve for that. Vanessa struggled with her cutting addiction. I was definitely rooting for a change in these teen’s lives.Ĭhange originates in each individual person. We believe people placed in unfortunate situations deserve what happens to them when it shouldn’t. We think people people that were blessed with great genes are happy when they aren’t. We think money buys happiness when it doesn’t. It brought to life all the injustices some people face in a blind world. People hear this and think, “Well what’s the problem.” It is hard to look past these things and see the loneliness these people experience. I saw him in Conner.Ĭonner supposedly had everything. I never will know his side of the story, but reading this book made me feel closer to him somehow. I have had experience with suicide before. Can you ever really get over pain…loss…love? Three teens have their fair share of issues, but can they find redemption in one another? Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots' campaigns now offer more turn-based strategy into the game rather than real-time strategy being the only gameplay aspect. Armies can also move anywhere in their nation's territory without using up a turn. The Cold War introduces the ability to fire nuclear missiles in the main map and initiate espionage missions. The map of a battle incorporates the region's environment, for example large forests in the Pacific Northwest. If the player chooses to lead the Americans, they must pay taxes to Great Britain, until they declare independence. The New World campaign allows the player to choose either the Americans, a European power, or a Native American tribe. Players must have intuitive leadership in this campaign because faulty decisions by the player can force themselves, that is to say, Napoleon, into exile. The Napoleon campaign challenges the player to conquer Europe in a limited amount of time, with diplomacy, alliances, conquest, and bribing with land. A player's decision to raze may cause the rest of the enemies to either fight harder, or question their casus belli and ally with you. The Alexander the Great campaign allows the player to choose whether or not to raze or incorporate conquered territories. Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots added four new " Conquer the World" campaigns: Alexander the Great, Napoleon I of France, the New World, and the Cold War.

You can find bullets for your pistol, glowing orbs for your Magic Claw attack and dynamite. Other than gold trinkets and food and vials that replenish health, there are a plethora of power-ups to pick up too. You'll get a gem for your Amulet each time you defeat a boss (right) This is one of my biggest pet-peeves in a collect-a-thon platformer so it's nice to see that it's not found here. If you defeat a guard or smash a box, its contents will remain where it lands until you collect it or reach the end of the stage. In a rather unusual move, perhaps allowed by the superior hardware a PC has over consoles, the gold will not disappear after a short time. These collectables are everywhere and play a part in your score at the end of the level. The game will even remember collected gold and defeated foes too, allowing you to bypass that tricky treasure-hunting interlude on your way back to where you were. Even when you do die - and you will often - the thoughtful placement of checkpoints and lack of unskippable scenes before trying again reduces frustration. The small platforms that make up much of each level are not too much of a pain because of this. Claw can stop on a dime, instantly attack and move mid-jump to be more precise in landing. On top of that, the slick animation doesn't get in the way of the responsive controls. In fact, every anthropomorphic creature has this level of attention to detail, including you. Each one of them is designed and animated beautifully with enough spoken quips to convince you of their personality. That's not to say they're devoid of personality. I'd have liked them to have more of a pattern to clue you in on their weak spots but in the end, they're like playing an early one-on-one fighter. More often than not, they'll devolve into a mash of swirling blades as you button mash the Ctrl key until one of your health bars drop to zero. At the end of every other level, you'll confront one of these big bads. In response, they will often block or parry making you think about each encounter, especially when it comes to bosses. You can shoot, punch or stab them multiple times until they're weak enough to fly off the screen spraying gold coins as they go. I certainly found myself dying quite a bit.ĭuels will end with the bad guy releasing one of the gems of the Amulet of Nine Lives (right)Įnemies are a little more complex than your average platformer. The large, sprawling levels which can branch wildly on your way to the end are filled with devious traps, tough enemies and instadeath aplenty to overcome. It is almost unforgiving in its difficulty. Inspired by the real-life Chateaux d'If featured in Monte Cristo, La Roca (translation The Rock) eases the player into the intricacies of the game without being an entire cakewalk. Level one takes place in the prison's dungeon. He then takes advantage of an over-zealous guard dog and makes his escape. During his time in prison, Captain Claw has found a treasure map left by the cell's previous inhabitant which points to the mystical Amulet of Nine Lives. In many ways, the story and setting take great influence from the works of Dumas - The Count of Monte Cristo in particular. Claw, a feline swashbuckler imprisoned by the Cocker-Spaniards. Our hero is the Pirate Captain Nathanial J. The opening scene even runs almost 7 minutes, complete with a naval battle stint in a Spanish prison. It's a shame as these cinematics are pretty decent.
